Antipasti at Monte's

Italy is famous for its antipasti, delicious savoury snacks and starters made with ingredients such as fish, smoked meats and vegetables. As you would expect, we carry a range of delicious antipasti. For prices, call us or drop in to the shop!

Choose from delights such as juicy green and sumptuous black olives, salty anchovies and banderillas, sweet and sour cippollini onions, unctuously rich grilled artichoke hearts in olive oil and a selection of semi-dried and sun dried tomatoes, grilled aubergines and peppers.

Anchovy Fillets Artichoke Hearts
Anchovy fillets are a versatile ingredient both in their own right as, say, a topping for pizzas or salads or used as a seasoning, pounded with breadcrumbs, olive oil and garlic to thicken sauces for a rich savoury flavour. Our artichoke hearts are prepared and cooked before being preserved in olive oil. They're delicious quartered and tossed with a crunchy salad or served on their own with aïoli and baby new potatoes as a starter.
Grilled Aubergine Boscaiola Olives
Grilled aubergines make a wonderfully flavoursome addition to moussakas and stews and are equally good roughly chopped and served with wholemeal toast and a little yoghurt with herbs. These giant juicy green olives have an intense fruity flavour that makes them among the most prized of all the eating olives. Try them as they come as a healthy snack or mix, chopped into bread dough with a little olive oil for a luxuriously tempting loaf.
Cipollini Funghi
These baby onions have an intensely sweet and spicy taste that makes them the perfect snack at any time of the year. They go particularly well with Boscaiola Olives as part of a snack selection and make a wonderful addition to any picnic spread. These preserved funghi are picked when very small and preserved in a mix of herbs, olive oil and wine vinegar. They make an interesting addition to any bowl of pasta but for a real treat, fry up some chopped pancetta, stir in some funghi and mix into freshly cooked fusilli.
Garlic Cloves Mixed Peppers
Still not for the faint hearted, these preserved garlic cloves have a much mellower flavour than fresh cloves but are still guaranteed to keep the vampires away. If you love garlic, try them on their own as a snack or if you're not quite brave enough for that, use as you would frech garlic in roasts, soups and stews. These roasted skinned peppers make a colouful addition to any salad or stew especailly if added at the end as a garnish. They will enliven any tomato sauce so why not try them with our sugo al basilico on top of freshly cooked fusilli.
